Blackbook 'Painter of Light' Chardonnay

Essex grown Chardonnay, made within an urban winery in Battersea.

Blackbook Winery is situated at the end of a row of railway arches in Battersea. Not only are they unique in location, but they are unique in the fact that they're producing some of the UK's most exciting still wines.

This Chardonnay comes from Clayhill vineyard in the Crouch Valley of Essex. Hand-picked and sorted in the vineyard, the grapes made their merry way to London where they were pressed straight into Burgundy barrels. 20% of these were new, imparting a delicate touch of vanilla and spice.

Impeccably balanced and built for the long run, this will continue to improve over the next ten years, and perhaps beyond.

Blackbook Winery

Blackbook Winery

Blackbook was born of a love of three things: cool climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay; the English wine industry; and the country's capital, London.

Blackbook is the first solo project from winemaker Sergio Verrillo and his wife Lynsey. Whilst Sergio grew up in the US, they both consider themselves passionate Londoners who have long held the dream of starting an urban winery in the city. They've acheived this dream with their spot under a railway arch in Battersea, South London.

Grapes are sourced from growers within hours of the city, carefully selected for their well-located vineyards and high quality fruit. They endeavour to bring the hard work of the vineyard owners to the forefront by creating a range of single vineyard wines that showcase the quality and potential for making world-leading still wine here in England.

The Grape - Chardonnay

The Grape - Chardonnay

The world's most planted white grape variety, Chardonnay is prized for its ability to produce outstanding-quality wines in cool, moderate and warm climates. It is most often used as a single variety in still wines but is equally successful when used in sparkling.

The flavours of Chardonnay are many and varied; they're very much affected by where the grapes are grown, the winemaking process and maturation.

In cool-climates, such as northern France and England, you would expect flavours of orchard fruits like apples and pears, citrus and wet stones. However, in warm-climates (California, Australia) you'd get peachy flavours, tropical fruits, and sometimes even banana.

It is common to taste other flavours in Chardonnay, for instance fermenting or ageing in oak gives the wine flavours of vanilla, smoke and toast; the process of malolactic conversion can add creamy, buttery flavours; lees ageing adds body as well as biscuit notes.
