Bodegas Mustiguillo Mestizaje Blanco
Soft, aromatic and mineral white from native grapes in Valencia.
An organic Valencian treasure, full of floral aromas and crisp, stone-fruit flavours. Owner and winemaker Toni Sarrion has pioneered the return of the Merseguera grape native to southeast Spain, which makes up most of this interesting blend. The variety brings a clean minerality to the wine, offset by the waxy and aromatic Viognier and Malvasia.
This intriguing, organic, Valencian white blend has bags of appeal. Led by the regional rarity Merseguera, supported by Viognier and Malvasia it comes from high-altitude vineyards in Valencia's interior, and balances sun-kissed ripeness with a vibrant freshness. The winemaking leans towards minimal intervention, bordering on a 'natural wine' approach, resulting in intriguing texture and complexity on the palate.
Toni Sarrión is the man behind Bodega Mustiguillo. His Valencian estate sits up in the rugged Utiel-Requena backcountry well away from the coast. He's all about once sneered at local grapes now turned into something seriously exciting. Hallmark Mustiguillo wines are a bit earthy and spicy. Not so much polished sunshine-in-a-bottle stuff, more rough-and-tumble with deep connection to the land. Above all there’s a pride showing through of taking unloved varieties and really making them sing.
