Burlesque 'Old Vine' Zinfandel, Lodi

Great value, cheeky and fruit-forward in style.

A great value wine which is fruit-forward in style. The grapes are selected from old vine Zinfandel vineyards in the Lodi region of central California, vinified in stainless steel to protect the strong fruit profile before being aged for a short time in new American oak barrels. The result creates aromas of vanilla, cracked black pepper and dark damson fruit. On the palate this wine is round and fleshy, beautifully balanced and packed full of robust red fruit flavours with a lick of oak.

Lodi AVA, part of the larger Central Valley wine region of California, is located directly east of San Francisco Bay between the cities of Sacramento and Stockton. The west of the region lies close to the edge of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Its eastern boundary runs parallel with the Sierra Foothills.

The AVA proclaims itself as the Zinfandel Capital of the World. Over 40 percent of California's premium Zinfandel vineyards are located here. Lodi is known for old vine bottlings, with some plantings dating back as far as 1888. Many of these are on their own roots and naturally low yielding.

Zinfandel/Primitivo

Zinfandel/Primitivo

Depending on where you are, you’ll call this black grape by different names. In California it’s Zinfandel; in Italy, notably in the southern region of Puglia, it is Primitivo.

Zinfandel/Primitivo is a variety that needs a warm climate to ripen successfully, and the flavours vary depending on how ripe the grapes are. In cooler areas you’ll typically find wines with juicy red berry flavours (strawberries and raspberries), whereas in warmer climates, flavours turn to deeper black fruits (blackberry, plum). There tends to always be a sweet spice and an underlying peppery note to the wine regardless of where it’s from.

Zinfandel/Primitivo is notorious for uneven ripening, and sometimes there are grapes within a bunch that start to raisin before others have ripened. This leads to high sugar levels in the fruit, which in turn makes for high alcohol wines (as well as offering more of a dried fruit flavour profile).
