Cantina Roccafiore Sangiovese IL Roccafiore
Stunning sustainable Sangiovese from the undulating hills within Umbria.
Founded during the late 1990s by Leonardo Baccarelli, the Roccafiore project was started with a vision to produce wines only from native grapes, but also with an organic and sustainable approach. Leonardo’s son Luca joined the family business, and together with winemaker Cristian Giorgioni and oenologist Alessandro Biancolin, they focus on producing terroir-driven, mineral wines from their estate vines.
This Sangiovese comes from the single vineyard ‘Il Roccafiore’ in the Todi sub-region of Umbria. Described as the green heart of Italy, it’s an area known for its cold and rainy winters and cool ventilated summers, which helps to produce grapes with a vibrant freshness. The vineyard is positioned at 300-380 metres above sea level, where there are considerable temperature swings between day and night, allowing for slow, gradual grape ripening. The result is gorgeously rich fruit flavours that are balanced by natural bright acidity.
Brimming with ripe plum, red berries and overtones of liquorice and tobacco, this is an excellent expression of Sangiovese. Having been aged for 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, the tannins are elegant and well-integrated, and the finish is complex yet classy.
