Chateau Du Moulin a Vent Couvent Des Thorins
Supple and silky Beaujolais from a historic Chateau.
In 2009 the Parinet family acquired the estate from the original heirs. This handover has allowed the Château to return to centre stage, as the region had been going through a major crisis since the mid-1990s. However, the longevity of Château du Moulin-à-Vent on the international stage is proof of its character.
Coming from the terroirs of ‘la Delatte’, ‘les Rouchaux’ and ‘les Maisonneuves’ on the east slope, below the historical moulin-à-vent. The Chateau is considered to have some of the finest combination of Terroir in the region. Specific granitic soils (gorrhe), laying over deeper soils rich in manganese and metallic oxides. The vineyards are slightly protected from the powerful winds blowing on the appellation. If time passes, the terroir remains: in line with their predecessors, Édouard and Brice rely on this keystone to showcase the diversity and grandeur of Moulin-à-Vent.
A small portion of the harvest is done as whole cluster bunches. Pumping-over during a cold pre-fermentation soak and at the end of fermentation is used to increase roundness and finesse in the wine. Punching the cap is done at the beginning of fermentation, combined with twenty-one days extraction to bring out the full potential of the terroirs and varietal character of the Gamay grape.
The wine is, like most Gamay, silky and perfumed. Showing a lovely supple ripe profile of red and dark fruits combined with subtle notes of flowers and earth. The wine is relatively more medium bodies than other Gamays. A perfect option for an aperitif red that can be enjoyed slightly chilled in the summer.
