Funkstille Gruner Veltliner

Zingy, green fruited white from Austria.

Zingy, somehow spritzy without having any actual fizziness, with a lovely balance of ripe, slightly exotic fruit and spicy, herbal notes.

It all started with Grüner, then Zweigelt and now Funkstille is a quartet including Riesling and a Skin Contact wine … capturing Austria’s most famous varieties and archetypal styles under some eye-popping packaging. All work in the vineyard is carried out sustainably, with the use of their own fertilisers made from grape skins, manure and straw from their fields, to improve the soil structure and vitality of their vines. The south-east and south-west exposure of the slopes provides conditions for perfect ripening. Grapes are harvested in the early morning to harness acidity and pure fruit expression and taken to their energy neutral winery for vinification.

The winery is energy neutral. The grapes are pressed and the must is fermented in stainless steel tank with selected yeasts for 15 to 25 days at controlled temperatures which get warmer the nearer they get to the end of fermentation. There is no malolactic fermentation but the wine benefits from 8 weeks of lees contact. Gentle fining and cold stabilisation.

Grüner Veltliner

Grüner Veltliner

Grüner Veltliner is a white grape variety that grows almost only in Austria. The primary fruit flavours in Grüner Veltliner are lime, lemon and grapefruit. There is also a green, herbaceous flavour that is often described as white pepper. However, what makes Grüner Veltliner wine so unique is its signature vein of acidity that explodes in your mouth.

Most Austrian Grüner Veltliner is made in a light and zesty style, intended to be drunk young, within 1-2 years of the vintage. Don’t be surprised to see tiny bubbles on the inside of your glass too. Grüner Veltliner is best served ice-cold on a hot summer day, and it makes an exotic alternative to Sauvignon Blanc.

Occasionally Grüner Veltliner is made in a much richer style, often labelled ‘Reserve’. Imagine textured layers of lemon, honey, nuts and a subtle creaminess, still with that hallmark acidity.

One of those food-friendly wines, Grüner makes the perfect palate cleanser for rich dishes, pairs well with Japanese cuisine and is one of the few still wines that hold up against challenging vegetables like artichoke and asparagus.
