Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc (Magnum)

A wine we love so much, it makes more sense to just sell two bottles at a time.

From Marlborough legend, Kevin Judd, this excellent Sauvignon Bland consists of citrus blossom and elderflower entwined with nectarines and white peaches, mandarin and melon with a twist of lemon. Intensely flavoured, succulent and crisp with a delicate herbal infusion.

Fruit was sourced from various prime vineyard sites in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys and the central Wairau Plains which contain high proportions of New Zealand’s greywacke river stones, to the older and denser clay-loams of the Southern Valleys. Harvested largely by machine during cool (often cold) night-time conditions preserving the light and delicate flavours of the sauvignon Blanc grapes.

Greywacke is truly a family affair and while the company now exports its wines all over the world, the ethos is very much ‘keep it simple and hands-on’ with a small, dedicated team running the company from Greywacke HQ in the heart of Marlborough’s Omaka Valley.

All vineyards are sustainably managed with substantial and increasing proportions coming from organically farmed sites. Crop levels are restricted to enhance concentration of flavour and a long, cool growing season produces fruit with incredible varietal intensity and bright, natural acidity. Meticulous canopy management regimes are employed to provide sufficient fruit exposure to deliver ripeness of flavour, textural richness and optimum acid balance. Greywacke is accredited with AMW status (Appellation Marlborough Wine), ensuring provenance, authenticity and integrity.

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is an aromatic white grape variety that is best known for producing dry wines with distinctive herbaceous (grass, green pepper, asparagus) and floral (blossom) aromas and refreshing high acidity. Originating in France’s Loire Valley, it is now grown around the world, offering a variety of styles. Fruit flavours vary according to ripeness, from apple and gooseberry to melon, peach and passionfruit. Occasionally, Sauvignon Blanc is aged in oak (Fumé Blanc), offering a more creamy palate.

Sauvignon Blanc is the only grape variety permitted in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, two appellations of the Loire Valley, and they’re known to have notes of wet stones. Sauvignon Blanc is also found in Bordeaux, where it’s typically blended with Sémillon.

The hallmark Sauvignon Blanc region in New Zealand is Marlborough; bell pepper, gooseberry and passionfruit are common, alongside more vegetal aromas of tomato stalks, rich citrus, and freshly cut grass.

Other good examples can be found in Australia’s Margaret River and Adelaide Hills, Chile’s Casablanca Valley, Elgin and Constantia in South Africa, and California’s Napa Valley.
