Kershaw Clonal Selection Syrah

An outstanding expression of the Syrah grape. Elegant, silky and balanced.

Created by Richard Kershaw MW, the only Master of Wine who is making wines in South Africa.

Using specific clones of Syrah (SH9c & SH22), in small batches, this wine is the epitome of uniqueness and elegance. Grown in the cool climate of Elgin Valley, the grapes are handpicked and manually sorted before they are macerated for 3 days, where spontaneous fermentation occurs. The wine is maturated for 17 months in French oak from both Burgundy and Rhone. A small number of artisanal coopers were selected from Burgundy and Rhone, with only French oak chosen.

Taking a more precise scientific approach to wine making, each clone and soil type were micro-vinified as separate batches. Each batch used an algorithm that they have developed to ascertain which coopers work best and how many new and used barrels are utilised. This means that oak usage can vary each year, however it results in a wine that consistently amazes!

On the nose, the wine is bursting with raspberry, black plum, green pepper and subtle notes of lavender. Refined and fresh with a medium palate and fine tannins. The wine is elegant and well balanced with the tannins and acidity working in harmony to produce a sensory experience. Dry, smooth and with a wonderful depth of flavour. This wine could age for another 5 years more. This wine represents innovation and pure creativity, the perfect choice for any wine lover.

Syrah/Shiraz

Syrah/Shiraz

A rich, powerful, and sometimes meaty red wine that originated in the Rhône Valley of France. Syrah is the most planted grape of Australia, where they call it Shiraz, and the Barossa Valley is home to some of the oldest Syrah vines.

Syrah is responsible for some of the darkest full-bodied red wines in the world, and it has dark fruit flavours that go from sweet blueberry to savoury black olive. Grown across the globe, it can be used as a single variety or as part of a blend.

Old World Syrahs from Italy and France tend to have more acidity and earthy-herbaceous aromas. New World-styled Syrah wines from Australia, The U.S. and South America usually have more fruit-driven characteristics with lots of spice.

Some of the most famous (and most expensive) Syrah is from the 340+ acre Northern Rhône appellation called Hermitage. Elsewhere in the Rhône, you'll mostly find it blended with Grenache and Mourvèdre (GSM Blend).
