Lismore Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc

A modern and unique barrel fermented Sauvignon Blanc.

Tucked into the foothills of a dramatic mountain range at the bottom of Africa is Lismore Estate Vineyards. Californian Samantha O'Keefe has found paradise and the perfect terroir. Her passion combined with vines planted at 300 meters, chilled by the winter snow and nourished by the African summer sun, produce classic cool climate wines which are rich, complex and lovingly hand crafted. With one of the coolest climates in South Africa with extreme diurnal temperature shifts, her wines show us a very distinct sense of place. One that tells a story in the glass. Lismore is the pioneer of Wine of origin "Greyton", it has been designated by SAWIS recognizing the unique and special terroir of this region.

This Sauvignon Blanc has been fermented in 300 litre old oak barrels. Made in an oxidative style and given extended lees contact, there's an extra richness and complexity that you don't usually find in your average Sauvignon Blanc. This wine strikes a great contrast to the sharp acidity of other new world Sauvignons, displaying a more creamy and silky mouth feel.

Bright citrus, tropical fruits, florals and herbal notes leap from the glass, with a toasty nuttiness on the finish. Excellent terroir and the winemaker’s passion at its best.

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is an aromatic white grape variety that is best known for producing dry wines with distinctive herbaceous (grass, green pepper, asparagus) and floral (blossom) aromas and refreshing high acidity. Originating in France’s Loire Valley, it is now grown around the world, offering a variety of styles. Fruit flavours vary according to ripeness, from apple and gooseberry to melon, peach and passionfruit. Occasionally, Sauvignon Blanc is aged in oak (Fumé Blanc), offering a more creamy palate.

Sauvignon Blanc is the only grape variety permitted in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, two appellations of the Loire Valley, and they’re known to have notes of wet stones. Sauvignon Blanc is also found in Bordeaux, where it’s typically blended with Sémillon.

The hallmark Sauvignon Blanc region in New Zealand is Marlborough; bell pepper, gooseberry and passionfruit are common, alongside more vegetal aromas of tomato stalks, rich citrus, and freshly cut grass.

Other good examples can be found in Australia’s Margaret River and Adelaide Hills, Chile’s Casablanca Valley, Elgin and Constantia in South Africa, and California’s Napa Valley.
