Markovartis Xinomavro
A xinomavro to rival Barolo. Bold and briming with flavour
Markovitis winery (formerly Chateau Pegasus) is a legend in Greek wine making. Being the first to be credited for their organic practices, they produce one of the most historic and famous Xinomavro’s in Naoussa. Full of ripe red fruits, sweet spices and herbs on the nose, with a lovely length this wine is balanced and its high-quality shines through.
Markos Markovitis is the third generation at the helm of this family-run estate in Naoussa a region in the north of Greece, near Thessaloniki. He is famous for making Nebbiolo-style wines from the indigenous variety Xinomavro, which can be just as age-worthy as top Barolo.
Marko's grandfather planted 24 hectares of the Xinomavro grape in 1970 in the foothills of Vermio mountain, on a gentle slope, between a forest of oaks. Markos utilises this wonderfully, crafting a broad range of styles from this wonderful grape that perfectly s why Greek wine should be demanding all our attention. Whether it’s a fragrant rosé, or deeply textured age-worthy reds, there isn’t much that Xinomavro can’t do!
