Pieropan Calvarino Classico

A dazzling white from one of northern Italy’s most iconic producers

Calvarino is situated in the heart of the Soave Classico zone and is the ancient cornerstone of the family’s vineyards, bought in 1901. The name derives from ‘Little Calvary’ referring to the difficulties in working the land and the tortuously winding path to the bottom. The first label was released as far back as 1971 and the wine is a perfect example of true Soave.

Hand-picked, usually in two excursions to select the ripest grapes. A blend of Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave the grapes are vinified separately at low temperatures in glass lined cement tanks, this preserves the fresh varietal character of the wine and keeps a delicate and elegant acidity in the wine. Resting for a year on the lees to impart a textual complexity, the wine is slowly aged in the bottle before release.

The nose is fresh, mineral and flowery, with aromas of elderflower, aromatic herbs, fresh almond, pear and yellow peach, lemon and crispy cherry.  Dry, refreshing, well balanced and elegant on the palate. The finish has a tremendous length. This is an example of how good Italian white wine can be!

Pieropan have been making wines since 1901, they display expert craftmanship every vintage and their wines stand out from the rest. All the way down to their recognisable bottles, their production shows how iconic they are.
