Established as an expert in the production of Sauvignon Blanc, winning multiple awards which attest to the quality of his white wines. Formerly the winemaker at Cape Point Vineyards, Duncan Savage introduced his own label in 2011. Savage’s goal is just to facilitate a few rock-solid classic and elegant wines. Over the years at Cape Point, Duncan has been able to understand maritime vineyards a little better and have thus opted to source grapes from sites of varying altitudes.

Duncan Savage found his inspiration for Salt River in a special plot of 32-year-old bush vine Sauvignon Blanc, that he came across in 2019. He now sources only special plots with mineral characteristics to make this unbelievably good-value wine, which is a more complex and delicate Sauvignon Blanc than you might expect from a South African expression.

We'd almost rather you didn't buy this, it's just too good, and we know there's only so much of it around. Having learnt from some of the very, very best in the business, Duncan Savage makes his wines from a range of vineyards around the Western Cape. This has all the hallmarks of someone who has learnt their craft in the Loire, but ended with some of the highest quality fruit imaginable in South Africa.

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is an aromatic white grape variety that is best known for producing dry wines with distinctive herbaceous (grass, green pepper, asparagus) and floral (blossom) aromas and refreshing high acidity. Originating in France’s Loire Valley, it is now grown around the world, offering a variety of styles. Fruit flavours vary according to ripeness, from apple and gooseberry to melon, peach and passionfruit. Occasionally, Sauvignon Blanc is aged in oak (Fumé Blanc), offering a more creamy palate. 

Sauvignon Blanc is the only grape variety permitted in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, two appellations of the Loire Valley, and they’re known to have notes of wet stones. Sauvignon Blanc is also found in Bordeaux, where it’s typically blended with Sémillon.

The hallmark Sauvignon Blanc region in New Zealand is Marlborough; bell pepper, gooseberry and passionfruit are common, alongside more vegetal aromas of tomato stalks, rich citrus, and freshly cut grass.

Other good examples can be found in Australia’s Margaret River and Adelaide Hills, Chile’s Casablanca Valley, Elgin and Constantia in South Africa, and California’s Napa Valley.
