There's more history to South African wine than you might think, with the sweet white of Constantia, near Cape Town, in huge demand throughout much of the 18th and 19th centuries. The remarkable white dessert wine has been produced again since the 1980s, while elsewhere, regions like Stellenbosch produces its somewhat native crossbreed grape Pinotage, spicy Shiraz and Sauvignon Blancs, and cooler areas such as Hemel-en-Arde are making Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that stand up with the finest the French can offer
