Xanadu Black Label Chardonnay

An amazing fresh Chardonnay from Margaret River. A great Chablis alternative with a bit more weight

Utilising multiple vineyard sites to create the best blend for the wine, Xanadu Chardonnay is predominantly Estate grown in the Wallcliffe sub-region, with 70% of the blend being made with fruit sourced from our Stevens Road, Boodjidup and Lagan vineyards. The remaining fruit was sourced from mature vineyards throughout the Margaret River region.

Displaying a lovely pale straw with slight green tinge. The bouquet displays fresh, pears and grapefruit with delicate wafts of almond and subtle hints of flinty barrel ferment characters, adding complexity. The palate is medium bodied offering white fleshed nectarines, citrus and nashi pears. The wine displays a subtle salinity, while the creamy texture, derived from lees stirring, provides a lovely foil to the bright natural acidity retained in the Gingin clone. Refined yet complex, the intense fruit and core of acidity combine to focus the wine perfectly to a lingering finish. A contemporary Chardonnay, displaying classic Margaret River hallmarks. The Xanadu is a wine with great fruit intensity, and while drinking well in its youth it will certainly reward with careful cellaring.

Xanadu are key proponents of sustainability in winemaking in Australia, being one of the first with official accreditation for their sustainable measures. They hold that:

“Growing and making wine sustainably is a holistic approach to production that evolves the environmental aspect of the craft. It looks at how we can better use energy and water to create efficiency, support regions and communities, and establish a business that is resilient and thriving.”

The go to extensive lengths to maintain their philosophy and vision. All In all, Xanadu are ethical and quality focus making it a firm favourite.

The Grape - Chardonnay

The Grape - Chardonnay

The world's most planted white grape variety, Chardonnay is prized for its ability to produce outstanding-quality wines in cool, moderate and warm climates. It is most often used as a single variety in still wines but is equally successful when used in sparkling.

The flavours of Chardonnay are many and varied; they're very much affected by where the grapes are grown, the winemaking process and maturation.

In cool-climates, such as northern France and England, you would expect flavours of orchard fruits like apples and pears, citrus and wet stones. However, in warm-climates (California, Australia) you'd get peachy flavours, tropical fruits, and sometimes even banana.

It is common to taste other flavours in Chardonnay, for instance fermenting or ageing in oak gives the wine flavours of vanilla, smoke and toast; the process of malolactic conversion can add creamy, buttery flavours; lees ageing adds body as well as biscuit notes.
